Randy Balough defeats Rick Gunther for 2008 Vrbancic Bros./Carb Shop Shootout

Randy Balough has had a very successful drag racing season that included a win at the 2008 NHRASummit Nationals in Las Vegas and he put a cap on the year by winning the Vrbancic Brothers/Carb Shop Pro Gas Shootout on the final weekend of the Pro Gas season.
Eight cars qualified for the shootout, with top qualifier Randy Fabbro losing in the first round to Balough in a double breakout race. Greg Ventura advanced at the expense of Paul Wiechmann, Rick Gunther went to the semi as Roger Kato drew a red light, and Mike Blodgett Sr used a 9.903 to stop Pete Bothe. In the semi, Blodgett was .003 too quick against Gunther, and Balough went to the final with an 9.906 after Ventura red lighted.
The Balough & Benson Corvette had a .03 advantage at the line and held on for the win with a 9.918, 157.19 as Gunther’s roadster was .009 too quick, losing with a 9.891 at 138.66.
2008 Vrbancic Bros/Carb Shop Pro Gas Shootout runner-up was Rick Gunther with his ‘27 Ford Roadster. Rick lost with a 9.891 in the final round against Randy Balough. Randy Fabbro was the #1 qualifier for the 2008 Vrbancic Bros/ Carb Shop Pro Gas Shootout, but lost in round one of a double break–out race against eventual winner Randy Balough.
Greg Ventura’s red light in the Shootout semifinal paved the way for Randy Balough into the final. Balough’s winning time was a 9.906. Rick Gunther stopped Mike Blodgett Sr in the Shootout semi. Randy Balough defeated Rick Gunther in the Pro Gas Shootout final, 9.918 to a too quick 9.897.
