2006 Southern California Pro Gas Champion

Ray's Notes

We had 98 cars enter our 4th race, the “Randy Marcum Memorial Race” sponsored by Ron Gamino of R.G. Industries. Ron is a good friend of the Marcum’s and we all really appreciate him sponsoring this race to honor Randy.

Congratulations to Joe Roubicek for winning the race (and of course to his sidekick Dusty too). Besides being a very good racer Joe is also a really great guy. He has helped support SC Pro Gas for many years. Also Congrats to Hollis & Bobbi Collisure for their runner-up finish with their unique surf wagon. Thanks to Jim Sowards for sponsoring the race trophy and also to Joe Roubicek for sponsoring the #1 qualifier plaques and runner-up trophies all year.

Ron Marcum was our #1 qualifier and received $100.00 from Rumis Motorsports. I actually got goose bumps when I heard Mike announce that Ron had run a perfect E.T. on our last qualifying pass and was our #1qualifier. It was nice to meet Ron & Randy’s Mother (Grandma Marcum) and their two sisters, Gina and Stephanie and to see them all cheering him on. We had a 50-50 raffle that was worth $340.00 and we had Grandma Marcum draw the winning ticket. I couldn’t believe it when she drew her daughter Gina’s ticket. I think Randy’s presence was felt a lot at this race.

Our#2 qualifier Jim Israel received $25.00 from Jack & P.J. Giacalone of Pizazz Racing. We better keep our eye on Jim Israel; he leads the points, won our 3rd race and now qualifies #2. Our #5 qualifier, Mike Blodgett, Jr., received $30.00 from Ken “Racer” Brown of Brown’s Transmission & Repair.

Our race winner, Joe Roubicek, also won the $100.00 Bull-Eye award from Dave Calvert of CP Pistons for beating up on our point’s leader Mr. Israel in the second round. Last but not least our Turtle Award, sponsored by Jim Sowards, of $25.00 will go to Lee Littlefield for his .915 winning lite in round one when Andy MacDougall went deep.

I felt that all and all the 1st race at the new Fontana track went pretty well. Considering the heat and that this was their 1st race at the new track. There were definitely a few things that could have been better. Dave has received many suggestions on how to improve on things and he is working on implementing some changes before the Divisional race. I know a lot of us were not happy (including myself) about only two time trial runs, but because of the large car count and also to much down time in between classes I think this is the way it’s going to be unless we all work together and improve on the down time. We may also have 1st round random pairings. I do believe if we all work together things will get better. We are open to any and all suggestions. Our next race will be the “Russ Harris Memorial” race; it is after the Divisional race at Fontana. Dave said any one running the Divisional could leave their rigs there for our race. S\Street is running Saturday and anyone who would like can park in the holding lot Friday night. The gates will open at 7am on Saturday & Sunday and start racing at 9am.

Race Safe,

Ray
